Cherries have always been considered a symbol of passion and love, which led to them being branded as impure and forbidden fruit by the church. Nevertheless, the ancient tradition of St. Barbara's branches survived. According to this tradition, young girls looking to get married would place cherry branches in vases filled with water on St. Barbara's Day (December 4th). They would attach a note with the name of a potential suitor to each branch. The branch that bloomed first was considered a sign that this suitor would be the chosen one in the upcoming year. This beautiful tradition was closely connected to our beloved cherry. By the way, the tradition also stated that if no blossoms appeared on the branches by Christmas, no wedding would take place, probably even if the proposed suitor was not willing to marry..
