The pear belongs to the rose family and is a pome fruit. It originates from Anatolia and the Caucasus. It is assumed that it already existed around 3,000 BC. Today, around 5,000 pear varieties are known worldwide. Thanks to their great popularity and the large number of growing regions, pears are available all year round. The pear ripens from the inside out. Although the skin may still appear firm, the flesh may already be soft. There is a simple trick to check the ripeness of a pear. Pull gently on the stem: if it gives way at the base when light pressure is applied, the flesh inside is soft and the pear can be eaten.
