CHOCOLATE WAS ONCE USED AS CURRENCY

IN CANADA, CHILDREN WENT ON A CHOCOLATE STRIKE!

Do you get favors from your loved one in exchange for chocolate? You’re not the first person to accept chocolate as currency: for the Aztecs, the precious cocoa bean was a popular medium of exchange for goods and services.

And people have even gone on strike over chocolate! This happened in Canada in 1947. Children in a small Canadian town went on strike because the price of a chocolate bar at the local café was raised from 5 to 8 cents. After a newspaper reported on the chocolate strike, more protests followed from children in other Canadian cities.

A CHOCOLATE BAR FOR 470 POUNDS

FROM THE SOUTH POLE TO CHRISTIE'S AUCTION HOUSE!

Normally, a chocolate bar costs no more than two euros. However, in 2001, an Englishman paid a full 470 pounds at an auction by the British auction house Christie’s. And this was for a chocolate bar that had been expired for 100 years! Why was he willing to bid so much for such an old bar?

The chocolate bar once belonged to the British Antarctic explorer Robert Scott, who took it on his historic expedition to the South Pole. Scott died on the return journey of the expedition, and the chocolate bar, along with other scientific relics, was auctioned off to enthusiasts during the "Polar Sale."
